The treatment for balding comes in many forms and its effectiveness is largely dependent upon the kind of hair loss that it hopes to address. This is characterized by the different causes that lead to hair loss. It can be genetic, autoimmune, stress-related, nutrient based, chemotherapy related, infection or disease related. These are not however, the only causes that can induce hair loss. There are other instances though the ones mentioned are among the most common.

The binding of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) with the androgen receptors of the hair follicle for example, causes male pattern balding or androgenic alopecia. The fusing of testosterone with the enzyme 5-alpha reductase creates DHT, a hormone necessary for the development and maintenance of the male reproductive system. The DHT blocks nutrients from reaching the hair follicle when it attaches itself to its androgen receptors. This causes the hair follicle to shrink and eventually leads to hair loss. Treatment in the form finasteride can inhibit the 5-alpha reductase enzyme from binding with testosterone. This in effect will slow down the progression of hair loss.


Hair loss can also occur when there is a vitamin deficiency. The hair follicles require sustenance in order for it to grow properly and maintain its strength. Vitamins such as biotin can help promote this healthy status by regularly supplying the hair follicle with its essential properties. Being deficient in this vitamin however, is rare. It can be found in foods such as salmon, cauliflower, bananas and carrots among others. Certain bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract also naturally produce biotin. Eating foods rich in this vitamin as well as taking supplements can help hair to grow back.

Biotin to a certain degree is effective in promoting hair growth. This should be qualified however to mean that it is only possible to do this if there is in fact a biotin deficiency. It would not be effective for hair loss causes brought about by male pattern baldness or chemotherapy for example. There is still quite a bit of research that needs to be conducted to determine if biotin can successfully combat other forms of hair loss. Some tests has shown that it may actually treat alopecia areata though it has to be used in conjunction with other products to be able to create the desired effect. Taking biotin supplements however, has still not been proven with strong evidence to be effective in treating hair loss.

It is recommended to consult with a doctor before taking any form of treatment for hair loss. Self-medicating with biotin might lead to overdose which is indicated by skin rashes and high blood sugar levels. It is best to do initial research to find the appropriate remedy for the cause of the hair loss.
